Tamo, sometimes called Japanese ash burl, is one of the rarest and most sought-after figured woods in fine woodworking. Its dramatic, rippled figure only becomes available once the tree has died naturally. This desk-sized humidor puts that rarity on display.

Why no two are alike

Burl is not grain. It is the tree's response to stress, a knot of interrupted growth that produces the rippling, three-dimensional figure Tamo is collected for. It cannot be cultivated or cut to order, so every panel is chosen from material we have already sourced and set aside. The consequence is simple: the surface in front of you exists once, and the next Tamo humidor we build will not look like it.

The system inside

Humidity is handled by Boveda, two-way packs that release moisture as the interior dries and reabsorb it when the level rises, holding the level flat instead of letting it swing. There is nothing to fill and nothing to clean: the packs are swapped when they begin to stiffen, typically every two to four months. The Diamond opens on a drawer cut from solid oak rather than a hinged lid, so opening it does not empty the humidor. A lid releases most of the conditioned air in a single movement, while a drawer holds on to the bulk of it. The Blumotion mechanism closes the drawer slowly and silently rather than letting it slam, and solid timber rather than veneer keeps the front flat over years of humid air on one side and dry room air on the other.

Capacity and care

The 50+ figure is measured on a standard Robusto and moves with ring gauge. Keep the humidor below roughly 21 °C and out of direct sunlight. Above about 24 °C the eggs of the tobacco beetle can hatch inside a cigar. A dry cloth is all the wood needs, with no polish and no solvents.

An Icon of Rarity: Tamo Wood Meets Italian Mastery

Step into a world where nature’s exclusivity merges with the finesse of Italian artisanry. Our Diamond Humidor Desk in Tamo Wood is not just a cigar box — it’s a singular statement, sculpted from one of the rarest hardwoods on the planet.

Tamo wood (Japanese or Manchurian Ash, Fraxinus mandshurica) is celebrated for its “peanut shell” or pommelle grain — a shimmering, quilt-like pattern of undulating ripples and waves that captivate at first glance. Only a fraction of each Tamo log exhibits this extraordinary figuring, making every veneer a once-in-a-lifetime find.

Legend whispers that this rare pattern originates from tendrils coiling around the tree trunk, guiding growth in unpredictable, artful ways — nature’s delicate choreography at its finest. Revered in fine furniture, musical instruments, and even as dashboard inlays for bespoke Bentley cars, Tamo wood elevates any piece with unmatched prestige.

With the Diamond Desk Humidor, we’ve married this rare beauty to the precision of Italian craftsmanship, creating an heirloom for collectors — a discreet luxury, telling its story through wood grain rather than words.
